copy of a letter to Shlomo Hillel כפר דרום 8/10/54 Dear Shlomo, I am writing these few words begging from you maximum attention and help. I am coming immediately to the point. You remember Abraham [UNCLEAR]. You know that, on your orders, I recruited for him and began what was called in Gothen the "Bait". 6 days ago I learned from a woman who left Gothen 3 weeks ago, that Mr. Moussa Marzouk has been arrested in Cairo and is being "interrogated" (i.e. martyred) to speak. The whole case started as a case of illegal transfer of money. Few days ago, in a newspaper, and yesterday night at "Saint AL Arab" Radio Station from Cairo, it was announced that 13 men are to be tried by a military court for spying, and can be condemned to death because of each of 3 charges, & one of them being detention of explosives. This for us that the thing is very serious and is a matter of Death or Life. Other than Marzouch (the Karaite Doctor), I don't know who has been caught but it may well be that others from the BAIT in Goshen have been caught, surely the autho- rities here can be better informed. I know that 2 of the Bait (Dr Marzouch and Levy from Alexandria) were in Israel on a course in 1952, (I saw them back in France in August 1952 and although they did not tell me anything, I understood that they were on a course in 1953. Now, I know by experience that too often when people of ours in Goshen work for Israel and are caught, the Central authorities do 2 not do their duty sufficiently to help free them or help them. But I know that at least Mr. Merzouk, is a member of S.S.I. (A. Dar told me that every man who worked for him will be considered as a man of S.S.I.) And because I know that the State is responsible for every soldier, the maximum must be done. The fact is that I don't know where is A. Dar. And I don't know to whom to address myself. I write to you and I beg you to do the maximum. I know that you always did for people who worked for you. I beg you to intervene near the necessary authority. I. for that. Few details :- 1) Dr Marzouk's brother Yossef Marzouk, a Pharmacist, is in S.S.3. His address is S.S.3 444 33 - 303736 2) Because of their father's death and a question of inheritance, They (Yossef from Israel, and Dr Moussa and his mother from Goshen), were in France few months ago, and (it may be that at there return to Goshen, Moussa tried to send money to Israel to Yossef, to buy a house for the family. This may have been at the beginning of the whole thing. 3) Dr Marzouk has a Tunisian Passport and our Israeli authorities can manage to help him if as they know how do it, they can interest the French authorities; the least would be Regular visits to him in prison by the French Consul in Cairo This may help that he be less illtreated by the military police -- Or any other way that our authorities are surely able to help him and others, as they have to do to a member of [UNCLEAR]. Dear Shlomo, I have learned that a great many people of ours doing such works in different countries have paid by their lives the inefficiency or inadequacy of help from our authorities in Israel! It is yet time to help these ones. I conjure you to treat this question seriously and give all your efforts and interest to it .- I wrote this although I know I have not to mix in things which are not of my ressort.
