Post 28/12/54 Jewish Defendant Found Dead in Cairo Prison Egyptians Announce Bennett "Suicide" (28/12/54) Cairo 28/12/54 - (Reuter) Max Bennett, one of a group of 13 Jews on trial here accused of being a member of a spy ring, was found dead today. The Ministry of the Interior announced that Bennett committed suicide in prison by cutting a vein with a razor blade. He died almost immediately, the Ministry said. Bennett was a former employee of the Anglo-Egyptian Motors Co. A note written in French to his wife, found beside Bennett's body, said that he had no hope of acquittal and could not face the prospect of imprisonment. Bennett was found by prison guard who heard him moaning. He said Bennett asked weakly for water. By the time the prison doctor could be summoned he was dead. On the floor of the cell lay a note in English addressed to "My Darling". "There is no other way out" it said. "I have come to this decision very calmly. To hope for acquittal is an illusion. A short prison term of five years is the least I can hope for. This is more than I can bear morally or physically". Urges Wife to Remarry The note urged his wife to remarry because Michele their daughter, "needs a daddy". It asked that a tree be planted in their garden in his memory and closed with messages of love. A report here says that Mrs Bennett is at present in London. The German Consul in Cairo Arno Kiencler said that he had been informed of the suicide, since Bennett was a German citizen, and that he would call on the Cairo Governor and ask for results of the investigation. Kiencler also said he would make burial arrangements.
